The Taliban is a fundamentalist militant group that originated in Afghanistan in the early 1990s. The group gained international attention when it seized control of Afghanistan in 1996 and established the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. Under the Taliban's rule, Afghanistan was known for its strict interpretation of Islamic law, which resulted in severe restrictions on women's rights, limitations on personal freedoms, and the destruction of cultural heritage.

After the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States, the Taliban came under international pressure due to its harboring of Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda. In response, a U.S.-led coalition invaded Afghanistan, leading to the overthrow of the Taliban regime in late 2001. However, the group was not entirely defeated and began an insurgency against the Afghan government and international forces.

Over the years, the Taliban regrouped and gradually regained strength, particularly in rural areas of Afghanistan. They conducted numerous attacks and engaged in an ongoing insurgency against Afghan security forces and the NATO-led coalition. The conflict resulted in significant civilian casualties and instability throughout the country.

In recent years, there have been attempts to negotiate a peace settlement between the Taliban and the Afghan government. These efforts culminated in the signing of a historic agreement between the United States and the Taliban in February 2020, which aimed to facilitate a phased withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan in exchange for the Taliban's commitment to preventing terrorist groups from using Afghan soil to launch attacks.

In August 2021, the Taliban launched a major offensive, taking control of several provinces and ultimately capturing the capital city of Kabul in mid-August. This swift takeover resulted in the collapse of the Afghan government, and President Ashraf Ghani fled the country. The Taliban subsequently declared the re-establishment of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

The return of the Taliban to power has raised concerns about the future of human rights, particularly for women and minority groups in Afghanistan. The international community closely watches the Taliban's actions and urges them to uphold their commitments, respect human rights, and prevent the country from becoming a safe haven for extremist groups.
